Description

Some of Us is a collection of memoirs by nine Chinese women who grew up during the Mao era and now live in the United States.  The authors stories clash with the standard assumptions about the Mao era so often taken for granted today in mainstream books.  As one participant writes: “The sharp contrast between the social background against which I grew up and that of the U.S. women could not but call into question the ‘total negation’ of the Mao era.”

The issues explored here are as varied as these women’s lives.  Being of different ages, regions and family backgrounds, they delve into what it meant to have grown up as girls and young women.  The burgeoning rebellion of a young girl in northeast China. A girl’s struggles to obtain for herself the education her parents inspired her to attain.  They recount the high and youthful spirit that strongly affected many youngsters during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.
