Discussion on CHINA, SOCIALISM, and the NEW COMMUNISM
From 1949-1976, China was a socialist country and was a beacon of revolution and socialism to people worldwide. When Mao died in 1976, his closest supporters (the Gang of 4) were arrested and power was seized by forces Mao identified as "capitalist roaders," who immediately upon taking control set out to restore capitalism. Those rulers today claim the mantle of socialism - while inequalities deepen and China increasingly clashes with the U.S.
Is China socialist or capitalist?
What is real socialism?
What is at stake in this history are fundamental questions of the nature of capitalism and of socialist society, why we need revolution, why it is that socialism can be turned back to capitalism, and what can be done to advance beyond this era of exploitation and oppression.
